Roseville City Council Votes To Make 'Best And Final' Offer To Police Union

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — The Roseville City Council passed a motion to have the city's police officers begin paying into their own pensions.

Roseville Police were upset about the city council's decision to abruptly move negotiation talks up nearly a week to Thursday.

The meeting was originally scheduled for June 5, but the city called for a special emergency meeting that took place at 11 a.m. However, the police union says it wasn't notified.

One by one Roseville officers and supporters pleaded with city council not to proceed with the proposal.

"Whatever they want, we need to give it to them," a supporter said.

But there was more than just demands, there was downright anger at the morning meeting.

"I heard nothing in the presentation for the need of the urgency of this meeting," said one man.

It was a well hatched plan by the city council, according to the Roseville Police Officers' Association, to keep the public at bay.

"I'm sorry that it had to come to this; I really am," said one councilmember.

It was a unanimous vote. Officers will contribute 9 percent of their pensions, which the city says will cost an average officer $200 each month.

"People are you know already worried about making their mortgage payments, and now you're just inducing much more," said Roseville Police Officers Association President Jerry Wernli.

The officers union insists the costs are too high.

"We saw that we had a structural deficit," said Roseville Mayor Susan Rohan.

Roseville's mayor says they've done everything else they can to cut costs.

"The tenor of the meeting would suggest to me that the emotions would be as pitched next week as they are today," said Rohan.

The mayor said the city is willing to continue negotiation talks but a deal won't likely be reached if it is not close to what the city has approved.
