Crews Search For Teen Who Went Missing In Sacramento River

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The search for a teen who went missing in the water while playing with a friend has been called off for the day.

On Saturday afternoon, two teens, ages 16 and 13, were playing in the Sacramento River off of Sandy Cove Beach when, witnesses say, the 13-year-old called for help, saying the other boy was struggling in the water. The older teen then disappeared beneath the surface and didn't come back up.

"The mom was on the shore and she was panicking back and forth. She didn't know what to do," said a witness. "Somebody else put on a lifejacket and went to go get him, but it was too late."

After a two hour search on, in and above the river, crews were not able to find the boy and called off the search.

There's a strong current on the river that may have taken the teen down the river much farther from the place he was last seen.

The teen's name is being withheld. He was not wearing a lifejacket at the time.
