Davis Transforms City Streets Into Art Walk Gallery

DAVIS (CBS13) - Davis is transforming the city streets into a masterpiece of art with the largest collection per square mile than any other city in the nation.

With each step you take on the walking tour, you will find yourself on the nation's largest public art collection.

"The best place to start is the gallery. They have the maps there and you can see where to go. Most of the murals are downtown," said Myron Stevens, Davis Art Walk.

Over the past year local artists and community leaders have been transforming the city with colorful works of art.

"We have gotten such positive feedback. People love it," said artist Kerry Rowland Abrech. "Makes them feel like they are a part of it."

There is everything from bright bold murals to sculptures to intricate mosaic works. But it's more than just looking, the tour is high tech.

"The smart chips are in the murals. So you can go with your cell and click on that and you can get information and videos on the mural. So it's an interactive experience," said Abrech.

Other cities around the globe have tried to replicate the idea, but many say no one can compete with this Davis masterpiece.

"Between the university artists and the local artists, we actually have a great resource there. So we decided to put it to use," said Abrech.

The Davis Art Walk tour is free to the public and takes about two hours to see it all.
