Stockton Shooting Started As Crime-Prevention Stop By Cops

STOCKTON (CBS13) — A crime-fighting team in San Joaquin County is credited with taking four dangerous suspects off the streets after one of the suspects opened fire on Wednesday night.

Stockton Police say it all started in the parking lot of a shopping center on South Manthey Road when they noticed a car filled with four people acting suspiciously, one carrying a duffle bag.

Investigators say when officers tried to pull the car over, the chase was on. It ended blocks away in a middle-school parking lot. Two suspects gave up right away while the other two took off running.

Police say they chased Deandre Adams and Juan Barnes across campus. That's when Adams allegedly opened fire on officers with an AK-47. Officers fired back, hitting Adams.

Officers found Barnes hiding on the roof of the school, with a handgun nearby.

The county violence suppression task force is searching daily for Stockton's most dangerous criminals.

"This task force is going out to hot-spot areas and neighborhoods where there is a lot of crime, a lot of gang activity," said Stockton Police officer Joe Silva.
