UPDATED: Homeowner Shoots And Kills Alleged Thief In Turlock

TURLOCK (CBS13/AP) - Police continue to investigate a fatal Tuesday shooting in a rural area of Turlock.

A homeowner reportedly got into an argument with a suspected thief Tuesday morning and police believe the homeowner shot and killed the other man in the neighbor's field.

Officers who responded to the scene found a homeless man dead in a sweet potato field from a gunshot to the head.

Police are trying to determine whether or not the shooting was in self defense. The deceased man was allegedly found with stolen property from the man's yard.

Turlock police Officer Mayra Lewis says the homeowner, 58-year-old Robin Boyer, told police he spotted the man trying to steal some of his possessions and confronted him before opening fire. Boyer told police he had seen the man trespassing on his property on previous occasions.

Police have not identified the dead man, but say he was 22-years old.

Lewis says Boyer is cooperating with police and has not been charged.

The investigation is ongoing.
