Human Remains Discovered In Live Oak Backyard

LIVE OAK (CBS13) — Investigators have been digging at a Live Oak home since Monday, when someone discovered a piece of skeletal remains in their backyard.

Parts of a human skeleton were uncovered in the back of a home off of Archer Avenue.

"That's kinda why I haven't been out in the backyard. Kinda freaks me out. My 91-year-old grandmother lives here. It's scary."

Deputies say a relative of the homeowner was cleaning up the backyard on Monday when they came across something strange.

"What was located was a skeletal piece, and that's been determined to be human."

Sheriff's deputies along with an anthropology team from Chico State are now digging up the backyard in hopes they will find more.

"We're not sure how deep in the ground it was. From my preliminary visual on it, it doesn't appear that it was too deep into the ground. Then again, it's skeletal, so it's been there for some time."

Neighbors say the home has been abandoned for the last three or four months.

"We hope to find the entire body and put this whole case to rest."

But investigators say there are no missing-person reports that are active right now.

"We'll definitely be trying to determine all that by pulling some reports together from the past years as far as missing persons in this local area.

A mystery body that investigators believe has been here for a long time, which doesn't sit well with neighbors.

"It's that close. This is a little town. We all know each other. It could be somebody I know."
