Firefighters Call Rancho Cordova Grassfire Suspicious, Have Suspect Descriptions
RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) — Firefighters are calling Friday's 40-acre grassfire along the American River suspicious, and investigators have several suspect descriptions from witnesses who saw people leaving the area where the fire started.
The fire broke out after 2 p.m. south of the American River in Rancho Cordova. It spread through the wildland near Rossmoor Bar close to homes.
The grassfire—the third this week along the American River—engulfed trees and sent black smoke into the sky.
On Tuesday a 3-acre fire burned within feet of neighbors' backyards in Rancho Cordova.
Thursday's fire burned 100 acres along a section of the river in Sacramento.
Gerry Kester and John Romanotto have owned their home along the American River Parkway for 34 years. Fire danger has become a part of their lives.
"We have an annual fire—let's put it that way."
This week has been unusually active.
Battalion Chief Patrick Ellis says Friday afternoon's fire is suspicious. But right now, there are no signs the three fires this week are connected in an arson spree.
"We've got some pretty good descriptions of who we're looking for."
