Search For Arsonist Intensifies Along American River

RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) - Firefighters are on alert and neighbors are on edge as an arsonist remains on the loose.

Investigators believe the same person started three fires in four days in Sacramento County. The fires started in the area of El Manto Drive in Rancho Cordova. Firefighters battled the blazes on Wednesday, Friday, and yesterday.

A blaze sparked again today and firefighters say it was a hot spot, but that didn't stop Rancho Cordova police from showing up as the search for the arsonist continues.

"You obviously have a sick individual who likes the thrill of the excitement," said Sacramento Metro Fire Department Battalion Chief Charles Jenkins. We're getting reports from the public they're seeing a person out there, physically near the fire in one case with a lighter in their hand."

Firefighters say they're searching for a white man with long hair about 6 feet tall. It's keeping everyone nearby on edge.

"Knowing that when you're in the area, anything can happen, a fire just makes you feel worse," said Eric Her, who's concerned about the arsonist.

Investigators worry the arsonist isn't done.

As firefighters show up to fight this fire, they say it's possible the arsonist could be watching from the bushes.

"They really enjoy watching the fire engines come in and the public reaction and scared faces and it kind of empowers them," said Jenkins.

Firefighters say it's not a matter of if the suspect will be caught, but when. They just hope it happens before somebody gets hurt.

"We will catch them because they start making mistakes," said Jenkins.
