Yuba County Death: Newborn Tested Positive For Drugs; Allowed To Leave Hospital

LINDA (CBS13) — Investigators are trying to figure out why a mother who gave birth to a child who tested positive for drugs was allowed to leave the hospital.

That child would be found dead at the Rio Inn and Suites 11 days after she was born, and her mother, Jennifer Sierra, would be arrested.

First responders said they found Jennifer Sierra's motel room covered in drugs, drug paraphernalia and syringes.

The cause of baby Destany's death is still being investigated.

According to court records obtained by CBS13, Destany tested positive for morphine and codeine when she was born.

Hospital staff informed Child Protective Services about the positive results, but apparently CPS still allowed the baby to go home with her mother. Less than two weeks later, the baby would be dead, and CPS says they're looking into it.
