SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A Kentucky man recently discharged from the Marine Corps has been arrested after he tried to board a flight from John Wayne Airport to Denver with military artillery in his checked bag.
Orange County sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Hallock says 23-year-old Gregory Salyer was arrested Tuesday after security screeners detected suspicious devices in his checked bag.
The bomb squad found three artillery fuses, a sting ball grenade, which is an explosive that shoots out rubber projectiles, a small knife, and about 300 steroid and Adderall pills.
The military took possession of the grenade and fuses, which Salyer was not authorized to have. He was last stationed in Twentynine Palms Marine Base.
The discovery forced an evacuation of an airport gate and the Frontier Airlines flight Salyer was booked on.
