Man Fatally Hit While Helping Motorist In Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland police have arrested a driver who allegedly struck and killed a man who had stopped to help a stranded motorist.

Officials say the suspect was taken into custody after his vehicle ran into the man on International Boulevard in East Oakland and fled on foot Friday night.

Authorities say the suspect was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and driving under the influence of drugs and could face other charges. His identity has not been released.

Police on Sunday identified the victim as 39-year-old Jose Durante of Pittsburg. He was taken to Oakland's Highland Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officials say Durante had stopped to help another motorist push a car out of the road.
