Boreal Making Snow In Preparation For Early Ski Season

PLACER COUNTY (CBS13) - Snow is falling in the Sierras with a little help with technology.

Snow in September? It's a little hard to believe, but that's what's happening at Boreal Mountain Resort on Friday. As you pass by the mountain on Interstate 80, you can see the man-made snow being blown out of the machines.

Fourteen snow guns are being used to make the powder; and it's all being made possible due to the cold snap. The weather we're seeing was enough to be able to use the machines to make it stick as long as possible.  Temperatures at the resort range between 21 to 23 degrees.

"Snow in September -- this is awesome for us," said Tess Hobbs, a Boreal Mountain Resort spokesperson. "It's great. Our crews wait for this all summer long…we're all skiers, and to us this is the start of winter. "

Boreal could open in 30 days, which is spectacular because when you're driving by on interstate 80, you take a look out and see it, and you're like, is that white on the hillside?

We're getting answers about when the other resorts in Tahoe plan to open:

  • Heavenly, Kirkwood, Northstar-at-Tahoe and Mount Rose all are scheduled to open Nov. 22
  • Diamond Peak plans to open Dec. 12.
  • Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows will open on Nov. 27.
  • We're still waiting to hear back from Sierra-at-Tahoe
