Bear Spotted Wandering Through Yards In Roseville

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) - Roseville residents are on alert after a bear wandered into the yards of some homes.

The bear was spotted in the yard of a home on Spring Valley Drive in east Roseville. It climbed a fence and a nearby tree.

"One minute you're minding your own business, the next you look out your window and all of a sudden you spot a bear in your backyard," said Chuck Williams, the homeowner. "Didn't seem to be a vicious bear; he was very calm."

Police sent us photos of the young black bear, which is estimated to weigh about 150 pounds. They say it was foraging, got lost and now is trying to get back home. It was seen in multiple backyards on Hidden Valley Lane and could have traveled up to 60 miles to Roseville.

"There's several creeks and valleys that lead up to Folsom Lake and then of course the mountains from there and I'm certain the bear probably followed one of those creeks," said Ofc. Aaron Splawn with the Roseville Police Department.

Williams has is own theory of how the bear ended up in his yard.

"My wife feeds all these animals. She feeds the squirrels, the raccoons, the possums. She feeds them and I'm sure he got the word and that was the reason he was trying to get here," joked Williams.

If you see the bear, you're asked to call animal control.
