STOCKTON (CBS13) — A two-alarm fire is sending a massive plume of smoke into the air around Stockton.

The fire is burning at Newark Recycling & Recovery at 800 West Church Street in Stockton, near Interstate 5.

The fire had closed Interstate 5 in both directions.

Fierce winds in the area are making the fire difficult to battle, and spreading the flames.

CBS13's Andrea Menniti said embers from the fire carried into the wind and set a nearby pile of railroad wood.

Stockton Police Sgt. Joe Silva is urging people to stay away from the are and let crews work. He says a lot of manpower from Stockton Police and Fire are taking on the fire.

Stockton's fire chief says there are 18 spot fires burning throughout the city.

There was a report of a small amount of paper on fire, and then a propane tank explosion. That explosion likely started the secondary fire, setting railroad ties on fire.

A witness said railroad ties and tires are burning at the scene.'
