Roseville Woman Talks About Escaping With Family From Alleged Cop Shooter

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) - A Roseville family nearly came face-to-face with Friday's Roseville standoff suspect when he ran into their home to hide from police.

The family locked themselves in a room while Sammy Duran allegedly fired at officers outside. CBS13 met with the family and learned how they were finally able to escape from Duran.

"We heard the police officers telling everyone to get inside, so they were just too close for comfort, so we went into her bedroom," said the homeowner, who didn't want to be identified.

It is a stunning account from a mother whose home was suddenly under siege. As soon as she heard the warning calls from officers, she, her husband and 15-month-old baby hid in their bedroom, never expecting that Duran would choose her home as his hideout.

"We had barricaded ourselves in a room and we started smelling gas while we were on the phone with 911 and I went into panic mode," she said.

At one point, Duran allegedly turned on the gas, well aware her family was still inside.

"I flung open the blinds and started waving frantically so they knew someone was there and the 911 dispatcher was talking to them at the same time," she said.

She escaped by climbing out of the window while her husband blocked Duran from entering the bedroom. Seconds later, a shootout erupted through that same window between Duran and the officers outside.

"All I was focusing on was keeping my baby safe," she said. "The man there was not in his right state of mind. We had several encounters with him and it was a violent, terrifying experience."

The home she left is now in shambles.

"At the moment it's completely uninhabitable," she said.

The family was happy when Duran finally surrendered.

"I need to thank all the police involved, and my heart goes out to the families of the men that were injured because we came very close to being injured and I'm so thankful my family is safe," she said.

The family is staying with relatives because their home is still in no condition to be lived in.
