Man Gets 56 Years In Border Agent Killing

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 56 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was lured into a trap to steal his night-vision goggles.

Federal prosecutors in San Diego say Marcos Rodriguez-Perez, a Mexican national currently serving a two-year sentence for immigrant smuggling, received the sentence Thursday. He's the second to be sentenced of the four men convicted.

Rodriguez-Perez pleaded guilty in August to several counts including conspiracy and robbery.

He admitted he and four others decided to rob Agent Robert Rosas of his night-vision equipment in 2009. Rodriguez-Perez entered the U.S. with two others through a border fence hole, while another two people remained in Mexico and stood watch.

When Rosas resisted, he was shot and killed.
