Travelers Searching For Ways To Save By Lightening Their Loads

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Airline travelers are looking for creative ways to cut back on the cost of air travel over the upcoming busy holiday weekend.

One way they're cutting back is packing smarter so they can get as much as possible in one bag.

Brianna Buenzli's game plan is simple: travel early and travel light.

"You deal with it now, so you just try to pack with one bag instead of two," she said.

That's easier said than done.

With most U.S. air carriers charging to check bags, and three charging for carry-ons, passengers are fighting back and sharing their secrets.

One video shows how to cram all this into one bag that will fit under the seat in front of you:

  • 2 dress slacks
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 3 swim trunks
  • 3 T-shirts
  • 7 dress shirts
  • 7 boxer briefs
  • flip-flops
  • bathroom essentials

Travel experts aren't surprised with the fees airlines are charging.

"It's another way for them to add to the bottom line," said Anita Vanderzanden with The Travel Store. "Rather than raise air fares, they'll charge you for baggage."

Worldwide, airlines brought in $27 billion in non-ticket revenue last year.

There's not much that travelers can do, except get creative and pack a few ideas away to save some cash.
