Football Fever Hits Loomis As Del Oro High Heads To State Championships

LOOMIS (CBS13) - The town of Loomis is in search of an early Christmas present: a state football title.

The Golden Eagles from Del Oro High School are in a familiar position. They are the talk of the town.

One might normally refer to Loomis as a sleepy little town, but not tonight where it is wide awake with football fever with only one cure: a state title. The Golden Eagles are soaring to the division one state title game

"They're ready. They play hard every year. I think we're gonna do well," said Larry Halverson.

Halverson will be there to see them play.

"It's huge. This is the second time in like, three years, and it's something that doesn't come around very often," said Halverson.

Yes, Del Oro has been there before and the people of Loomis -- all 6,500 or so -- couldn't be more proud.

"Oh my gosh! So much pride and so much passion," said a resident.

That passion has been around since Loomis became a town, and football frenzy has only enhanced the spirit.

"Football is life around here. Del Oro has been here for 20 years doing what they've been doing, so it's life," said a resident.

But can the team close the deal?

"I'm pretty sure they have what it takes, honestly. They have a lot of skill. They have a lot of talent. I believe they can bring it home," said a Loomis resident.

It might sound cliché but the town of Loomis will welcome back their team, win or lose, with open arms. But they admit they'd like them to have in their arms the state championship trophy."

The championship game will be played in southern California in Carson Saturday night when Del Oro plays Bakersfield.
