Sweet Success: Rick's Dessert Diner Preparing For Big Move

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Sacramento dessert institution is enjoying so much sweet success, it's getting ready to move to a bigger spot.

Chubby Checker never sounded so sweet, and now there's a twist coming to the 50s-style sweets shop.

After 27 years in business at its current location, Rick's Dessert Diner is doing so well that owner Ahmed Abuita says he's moving to a bigger location to keep up with demand.

"I'm planning on having at least 20 percent more in sales," he said. "The demand is much greater than what we can provide to customers."

The pink palace where customers have consumed millions of calories since opening in 1986 can't keep up. While others have opened and closed, Ahmed says the recipe for his success is fresh ingredients and consistency.

"If you come and get the German chocolate or the black-and-white for example, even the design didn't change," he said. This we had 27 years ago the same design, the same quality, the same thing."

The dessert destination for so many Sacramentans won't move far. He found a spot around the corner. When the old office space is finished, it will sport pink neon lights and a stainless steel trim.
