Ceres Woman Uses Glass To Fight Off Suspect Recently Released From Jail

CERES (CBS13) — A Ceres woman used a piece of broken glass to fight off an attack in her home by a man who was just released from jail a day before.

With the help of neighbors, police arrested Aaron Modisett-Hollie, 18, in a field about two blocks from the victim's home.

A woman who didn't want to be identified lives next door to where the alleged attack occurred.

When her dog noticed trouble, she went outside and quickly landed face-to-face with a man breaking in through her neighbor's small window.

"He looked right at me and kept breaking the window and going in the window like I wasn't even there," she said.

As she called 911, the woman inside the home began the fight of her life.

"She was just screaming on the top of her lungs waiting for somebody to hear," the neighbor said.

Police say the petite woman took on her attacker by taking a piece of broken glass and stabbing the man.

"She tried to push him out, he continued to come through," said Deputy Chief Mike Borges. "She had the mindset to defend herself, picked up some of the broken glass from the window and begin using that to defend herself."

Modisett-Hollie ran away and cops were able to get him in the field.

He was released early from Stanislaus County Jail after serving only a small portion of a sentence on a similar charge. Sheriff Adam Christianson blames realignment and jail overcrowding for his release.

The woman was injured in the attack, but neighbors say she's doing well considering what happened.
