Children Playing With Matches Won't Be Charged In $60K House Fire
PROVO, Utah (AP) - Investigators say three boys who admitted to accidentally setting a Provo house fire that caused about $60,000 in damage won't be charged due to their ages.
Provo Fire Marshal Lynn Schofield says the boys between the ages of 6 and 8 will instead be referred to a fire intervention team for evaluation and education.
Schofield says the boys were playing with matches when they set fire to bushes in front of the house Friday afternoon.
A neighbor spotted smoke coming from the bushes and alerted the home's occupants, who safely evacuated before flames spread to the house.
No injuries were reported, and the blaze damaged three rooms of the house.
Witnesses told authorities they saw the boys near the bushes, and Schofield says the children admitted to igniting the fire.
