MODESTO (CBS13) – Police are investigating a deadly accident that killed three young Modesto teens late Thursday night.

The accident happened around 11:40 p.m., near Miller Avenue and El Vista Avenue. A car crashed into a large tree and caught fire. First responders were able to pull all three occupants out of the car, but the driver – a 16-year-old girl – died at the scene. The two other occupants – two 16-year-old boys – died at the hospital.

Police say that an officer out on patrol tried to pull the car over. But, the driver hit the gas and sped into a residential zone, police say.

The officer stopped the pursuit after losing sight of the car. Officers checking the area later found the car had crashed into a tree.

Police will be conducting a comprehensive investigation of the crash.
