Neighbors, Company Team Up To Honor Dying Veteran’s Last Wish

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A West Sacramento family is saying thank you after a company stepped up to honor a dying veteran’s last wish.

Gregg Duke, 51, wanted to see his favorite places one last time, and without the generosity of neighbors and The Home Depot, it may not have happened.

He’s battling terminal brain cancer and cherishes every single day.

“Right now, he’s taking it easy and enjoying the time he has left,” his wife Diane said.

She says her husband is in a wheelchair. His dying wish was to see the world one last time. But without a ramp, she had no way of getting Gregg from their West Sacramento home to the car.

“So my daughter went to Home Depot with the neighbors,” she said.

“The folks approached me here and asked for ideas to build a ramp,” said Fred Fernandez with Home Depot.

The more he listened to their story, the more he realized it was a chance to give back.

“It started to click,” he said. “Maybe we could put this together for them because they had no idea what this was gonna entail.”

The folks at Home Depot offered to build Gregg’s wheelchair ramp for free. Since time was of the essence, they came out to do the construction the very next morning.

“From what I understand, he was a veteran and for me being a veteran 21 years in the Army, it kind of touched me we were able to help this gentleman out,” Fernandez said.

Diane plans to take Gregg to his train club, maybe for the last time this weekend. She wouldn’t have been able to it before.

“We are just so thankful for it,” she said. “He went way beyond what he needed to do.”

Home Depot didn’t have to build it, and her neighbors didn’t have to help, but they did, because it’s never too late to make a difference in someone’s life.

“I thought the world would like to know there are still good people and good businesses out there,” said Gregg’s neighbor Brad Rosenblum.
