Brown Details Record, Challenges Facing California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown is presenting a robust defense of his record over the last three-and-a-half years, promoting his efforts with education, pension reform, workers' compensation, criminal justice and the economy.

The Democratic governor told about 1,300 guests during an annual California Chamber of Commerce breakfast Wednesday that "California is definitely back."

He says he has worked hard to reach compromises with lawmakers since his 2010 election but that much work remains to be done. That includes tackling $300 million in pension liabilities.

Brown faces re-election this year but is expected to easily win one of the top two spots in the June 3 primary.

He said as a young man he didn't like politics but that his father — a former governor — must have "silently" given him the bug.
