Jury Could Get Case Of Davis Mom Allegedly Drowning 5-Year-Old Daughter After Holiday

DAVIS (CBS13) — The case against a Davis mother accused of drowning her 5-year-old daughter and then putting her in the trunk could go to a jury after the Memorial Day holiday.

Shackled and guarded closely by Yolo County Sheriff's deputies, Aquelin Talamantes could soon be learning her fate.

During weeks of testimony in the courtroom, prosecutors describe her as a cold-blooded killer hooked on prescription drugs who hated being a mother to the point of murdering one of her two children.

Investigators say she drowned Tatiana Garcia at her home in Davis last September.

Police say later that day they found the child in Talamantes' trunk in the Pocket area of Sacramento.

On Friday, her defense attorney said her client is not a heartless mother, but someone suffering from mental illness. There is also documentation showing Talamantes had made several visits to a mental health facility prior to the murder.

Her attorney also tried to explain Talamantes' use of prescriptions drugs, saying she suffers from severe pain in her wrist from a work-related injury. That wrist was wrapped in a bandage on Friday.

But the prosecutor is still calling Talamantes a professional victim who tried to manipulate mental-health professionals to get prescription painkillers.

Closing arguments will begin after the holiday weekend. The judge says he expects deliberations to begin on Tuesday.
