MODESTO (CBS13) — San Francisco 49ers quarterback and Turlock’s favorite son, Colin Kaepernick, may be making headlines with his recent multimillion-dollar contract, but on Monday, he was focused on making some kids’ day.

He hosted the second-annual Against All Odds charity golf tournament in Modesto. The event raises money for Camp Taylor, a camp for children with congenital heart defects.

Monday’s fundraiser was a leadup to his commitment to appear at Camp Taylor. The kids were happy to see Kaepernick and fellow 49er, fullback Bruce Miller.

But like true fans, they didn’t hold back their disappointment over last season.

“It’s really cool and he’s really good,” said 12-year-old Juan Barragan. “The thing that sucks is when they lost to the Seahawks.”

And the quarterback says he never gets over those bad games.

“They stay with me,” Kaepernick said. “Games from high school stay with me. So it’s not something that goes away. You always have it in memory.”

The golf tournament sold out. Even Kaepernick’s old coaches bought tickets to play.

“I coached him in basketball, but really he coached me,” said Mike Staack a basketball coach at Pitman High. “He’s just a great kid and that he knew what he wanted and that’s why he’s where he’s at today.”

Kaepernick’s 6-year, $126 million contract with the 49ers made headlines, and so did the announcement that charges won’t be filed against him after allegations of a sexual assault in Miami.

Those stories, Kaepernick would rather ignore. He says the kids at Camp Taylor face tougher battles.

“I haven’t been through the things they have,” he said. “I try to support them as much as I can and let them know they’re great kids.”

The first camp is in Turlock on July 15.
