SMARTSVILLE (CBS13) — Several outbuildings were burned, but fire fighters managed to save homes from a vegetation fire burning near Smartsville in Nevada County.

The 38-acre fire burning along Hutto and Keller Roads west of Grass Valley is now fully contained.

Families were forced to escape the flames as it quickly grew.

“Get the garden hoses out—lots of ’em—and which way’s the wind blowing,” said resident Louis Silva.

Several outbuildings burned and a mobile home was destroyed. It was a close call, but homes were saved in the area.

It’s not clear what sparked the fire, but Cal Fire says these are the worst fire conditions they have seen since they started keeping track more than 100 years ago.
