Family Says Elderly Stockton Parking Attendant May Never Recover From Brutal Attack

STOCKTON (CBS13) — The family of an elderly Stockton parking attendant who was attacked on the job says he may never make a full recovery.

Surveillance video shows the attack on Elias Carranco, 76. Initially police believed Carranco was sucker punched, but charges against suspect Jack Perry were amended to say the assault was the result of a stun gun.

Perry, 40, was captured after neighbors saw the surveillance video and were more than happy to turn in the parolee.

The victim's sister, Mary Carranco, says she'll never be able to watch the video of her brother's attack.

"I didn't know what to think," she said. "My heart just—I don't know how to describe it. It was an awful feeling."

The Air Force veteran and retiree, seen with Stockton Mayor Anthony Silva at his hospital bedside, took a job with the city just to keep busy.

After the attack, Mary says he's having trouble speaking, and he can't stand on his own.

"He's not the same," she said. "He'll never be the same."

When surveillance of the June attack was released, the tips immediately came pouring in to Crimestoppers.

"This was one of the fastest-reacting cases we ever solved," said chairman Tommy Henderson.

Perry faces charges related to using the stun gun on a senior.

"What was his motive? What was this person's motive to hurt an old man like that?" Mary said.

Police say the two got into an argument just the day before. Mary says Elias was actually punched for the first time that day, but he insisted on going back to work the next day.

The second incident, the one caught on camera, landed the Stockton senior in the hospital, and a parolee behind bars.

"We're all Christians," Mary said. "We forgive you but you need to ask God to forgive you for what you've done."

Elias has a long road to recovery, and he may never work again. His family says he'll stay at an extended-care facility in Stockton for the foreseeable future.
