Bulletproof Vests Donated To Galt K9 Officers

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Galt K9 officers Hunter and Jax are receiving new, custom-made, ballistic vests - after Special Olympics athlete – and close friend of the police department – Karissa Krater donated about $2,500 to "Cover Your K9" to help make the lifesaving equipment available.

The official ceremony is taking place Thursday at Cal Expo for a reason.

"We came to Cal Expo, played the horses here [and] she bet on an unknown horse named California Chrome," said Christa Trinchera, Krater's mom. "She won big and wanted to do something great with the money so she decided to put vests on her buddies."

The custom-made vest offers the highest level of protection available for this type of gear – and gives Galt Police K9 teams another weapon in their arsenal, along with much-needed protection for their partners."

"Without hesitation, he goes into places I wouldn't want to go," said Officer Nathan Meyerdick about his K9 companion. "We can do attic deployments, I can do repels off of helicopters, roofs, and stuff like that. There are also attachments for lights and other attachments military-grade stuff."

Hunter will be joined at the California State Fair Thursday by fellow department K9 officer Jax and about a dozen other K9's from all over the state to help raise money for non-profit "Cover Your K9" fundraiser, since most departments don't have the funds available for these types of vests.

The two vests presented to Hunter and Jax were covered almost entirely by Krater's donation.
