Sacramento Shoppers Taking Wait And See Approach With Proposed Plastic Bag Ban

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — California is one signature away from saying goodbye to plastic bags now that lawmakers have approved a measure banning them after years of debate.

Though there are bans in cities around the country, this one would be the first to ban plastic bags across the state.

Sacramento shopper Paul Tibbits doesn't seem too worried, whistling as he puts his plastic-bagged groceries in his trunk.

"I didn't realize it was coming to a vote, and when it does I will use the reusable bag," he said.

The statewide ban would take effect next year as environmental lobbyists beat out opponents who warned the bag ban could cost jobs.

A similar law has been in place in Davis since July, and most shoppers in the city don't seem to mind.

"I was already bringing my own bags, and I was super excited to see that everyone else was bringing theirs," said Bineti Vitta.

The statewide ban now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown's desk, meaning you won't see plastic bags at the checkout lane in grocery stores again.

But there's more to the law: If you don't bring your own reusable bag, you'll have to pay 10 cents per bag for a paper one.
