Fast-Moving Fire East Of Mariposa Forces Evacuations

MARIPOSA COUNTY (CBS13) – A fast-moving wildfire east of Mariposa has forced evacuations of in the Ponderosa Basin area Friday afternoon.

According to Cal Fire, the fire is burning on Highway 49 near the William Sell Bridge, about 10 miles east of the town of Mariposa. About 50 acres have been burned so far.

Deputies are currently evacuating residents and southbound Highway 49 is closed at this time. A Red Cross Shelter has been opened at the New Life Christian Church on Cole Road.

The fire was first reported around 12:30 p.m.
