2 Homes Destroyed In Wildfire Near Grass Valley
NEVADA COUNTY (CBS13) – It's the call no one wants to get while away from their home.
"A friend called us and said, 'Dog Bar is on fire ... you better go home," said resident Mary Ellen Sorci.
The Sorci family was visiting other relatives in Lincoln when the Dog Bar Fire in Grass Valley broke out, threatening their neighborhood.
"We saw the smoke and the big dark clouds and we knew it was a serious fire," Mary Ellen said.
Their own home – and Sorci's mother-in-law's home – were both in the fire's path. They were told to evacuate.
"When you look down and you see your stairway burning property," Mary Ellen said. "Then it really hits home."
The flames got incredibly close to the house – the bottom of that staircase burned, the shed was still on fire. And their neighbor's house is gone.
Next door, firefighters worked to save what they could. But the home and the cars on the property could not be saved.
And just down the road, neighbors who haven't been evacuated are staying for now, but are being cautious.
"The horses are out, my wife's out, the dog's out," said Lorin Amsberry. "I'm ready to leave if I thought it was going to be bad enough."
For the Sorci's, watching their neighbor's home go up in flames is an image they'll never forget. They hope firefighters can put out the flames before more homes burn.
"It's heartbreaking. You really can't even express it until you see," Mary Ellen said.
All evacuation orders for the area were lifted later Saturday night.
