King Fire Thanks Yous To Firefighters Come In Quilt And Sign Form In El Dorado County

PLACERVILLE (CBS13) — When the flames went up last week, so did the expressions of appreciation to fire crews. Locals put a lot of effort into this thank you stretching across the US 50 walkway using quilt fabric to make it special, because the crafters know the job ahead for public safety is a dangerous one.

"It says thank you fire crews on this side and fire crews thank you on the other," said Sue Rees, owner of Kelsey's Needle Crafts

And the people its meant for also see it. Fire and law enforcement pass this stretch of US 50 to get to the King Fire burning near Pollock Pines.

"It's a team effort. It's not just firefighters because without law enforcement you've got a lot of other problems you can't deal with as a fireman," said Stan Rees.

And it's safety first for the volunteer quilters- tying tight knots to keep the fabric from falling on traffic.

Other signs may not be homemade, but there are certainly a lot of them and they get the point across. These come from a woman named Rosalee Baker and the Chamber of Commerce. And for safety again, the signs couldn't have words, only pictures to not distract drivers. But the signs don't get past anyone.

"We talked to them who were from the valley and they were like you know we get paid," Sue said. "But we said it's OK. We want to say thank you. We want to say it and this is our way to say thank you."

The crafters say when the King Fire gets to 80 percent containment they'll take it down, which will be another project, but they have the permission and support of the city to display these thank yous.
