Rain Helping In Battle Against King Fire

PLACERVILLE, Calif. (CBS/AP) — Wet weather is helping California firefighters gain control of a massive wildfire threatening thousands of homes in the Sierra Nevada foothills.

CalFire officials said Thursday the so-called King Fire east of Sacramento grew slightly overnight to nearly 150 square miles. But containment also increased, and now tops 40 percent.

CalFire spokesman Jerry Rohnert says the rain is increasing humidity, bringing down flames and giving firefighters more opportunity to build containment lines.

Rohnert says the wet weather is expected to continue through Saturday. That should help contain the fire, which has become the second priciest in California this year.

The blaze has burned 95,347 acres, destroyed 12 homes and is threatening another 12,000,
