Two Southern California Men Guilty In Federal Terror Trial
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A federal jury has found two Southern California men guilty of conspiring to support terrorists and murder Americans overseas.
The verdict Thursday in Riverside federal court followed a week of deliberations.
Federal prosecutors say Sohiel Omar Kabir and Ralph Deleon planned to train overseas as terrorists so they could target U.S. military and allies.
Kabir was acquitted on one conspiracy count and jurors didn't reach verdicts on two conspiracy counts against Deleon.
Defense lawyers portrayed the men as pot smokers who talked a big game but didn't intend any harm.
Deleon and two other men were arrested two years ago before embarking on a journey to meet Kabir in Afghanistan. Kabir was later caught by U.S. troops in Kabul.
The two other men have pleaded guilty and cooperated with prosecutors.
