Firefighters Gain Ground On 459-Acre Applegate Fire

APPLEGATE, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters gained the upper hand overnight on a wildfire along Northern California's Interstate 80 east of Sacramento that threatened 1,000 homes.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection reported Saturday that firefighters have contained 55 percent of the blaze that consumed 459 acres in the communities of Applegate and Wiemar. Cal Fire reported that five homes and multiple utility buildings have been destroyed. One injury has also been reported, but no details were provided.

The fire began Wednesday and briefly closed Interstate 80. The cause is under investigation.

A fire in Yosemite National Park, meanwhile, was at 311 acres and 54 percent contained. A major route into the park remained closed, though shuttles were being provided into the park. The road is expected to be opened Sunday.
