Visa Issue Keeps Harvard Student In Mexico From Returning To U.S.

LOS REYES LA PAZ, Mexico (AP) - A Harvard University junior who left the United States hoping to save his dying mother is now unable to return.

Dario Guerrero lived in California illegally since his parents brought him from Mexico as a toddler. Like thousands of other young immigrants, he won a reprieve from deportation from the Obama administration in 2012. The catch: they can't leave the country without federal approval.

Guerrero says he waited more than a month and a half for permission as his mother's cancer got worse.

Finally, he decided to take her for alternative treatments in Mexico before getting the official OK. She died weeks later, and he was by her side.

The federal government says the rules are clear: Guerrero self-deported.

Guerrero says he panicked and deserves a chance to come home.
