Girl, 11, Recovering After Being Hit In Drive-By Shooting

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Police are investigating the shooting of a young girl in her family's home in what police believe is a drive-by shooting.

Neighbors we spoke with say the North Natomas neighborhood where the shooting happened is full of kids and friendly neighbors. They heard the shots Saturday night, but are trying to figure out what exactly happened next.

"There were gun shells out in the middle of the street," one neighbor said.

The markings on the door show where the bullets went through the 4900 block of Alterra Way home.

Police say they responded just after 11 p.m. to a report of a drive-by shooting and found that a 11-year-old girl was hit by the gunfire. She was taken to the hospital by her family, but on the way the family contacted police and she was ultimately taken via ambulance to an area hospital.

Two of the bullets hit the little girl's tiny body, police say.

Neighbors say it's odd because they didn't hear any commotion in the street and there was no reaction from the neighbors after the bullets hit their home.

"There was no car that took off, nobody driving by, so it was kind of odd," the neighbor said.

Investigators have been asking neighbors for surveillance tape if they have any.

"What we do believe is that there is a vehicle involved. It appears someone may have exited the vehicle and shot," said Officer Doug Morse with Sacramento Police.

Police say they are not ruling out gang activity in this case.

As of Sunday night, the girl remains hospitalized. Her injuries are reportedly not life-threatening.
