Road Where SUV Crash With Bicycle Killed Three People No Stranger To Deadly Accidents

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Three people are dead after an SUV hit a bicyclist riding on Howe Avenue near Burney Way, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The CHP says a 2008 Chevy Tahoe drifted left, across traffic while going southbound on Howe Avenue north of Burney Way. The SUV then rear-ended the cyclist and threw her to the ground, killing her instantly.

"For unknown reasons he drifts off to the left, crosses the two northbound lanes, rear ends the bicyclist, ejecting her 100 feet, killing her instantly, running over her bicycle, continues on," said CHP officer Chad Hertzell.

From there, the bike went under the car, and the SUV smashed into a tree and caught fire.

All that remained was the mangled metal of the SUV after it hit a tree.

"It was like bad," said Millie Ann Davis. "It landed over there, it started on fire, and there were people trying to get people out of there, because they thought it was going to explode."

The passenger in the SUV was thrown into the back of the vehicle and died at the scene from blunt force trauma. She was not wearing a seat belt.

Neighbors have been on edge ever since a 7-year-old, Tayvon Webb, died walking along the same street almost three years ago. A new light, bike lanes, and crosswalk haven't alleviated fears.

"It's just crazy people now these days, they don't slow down," said Jessica Torres. "They put this light in here, and I feel like now, they don't want to stop at all, they try to speed through here."

The male driver of the car was taken to the hospital with major injuries. He would later be pronounced dead.

The CHP reports there was fresh alcohol in the vehicle, and it may have played a role.
