Previous Multiple Fatality Incidents Involving California Law Enforcement
Other shootings that ended in multiple law enforcement deaths in California:
- February 2013, former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner killed four people, including Riverside police officer Michael Crain and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Jeremiah MacKay, during a weeklong rampage that involved a massive manhunt ending in his death.
- February 2013, two Santa Cruz police detectives, Sgt. Loran "Butch" Baker and Officer Elizabeth Butler, were shot and killed during a routine investigation of a former soldier with a criminal past.
- March 2009, four Oakland police officers, Mark Dunakin, John Hege, Ervin Romans and Daniel Sakai, were killed by a parolee during a traffic stop and a later shootout at an apartment complex where the man had fled.
- April 1970, four California Highway Patrol officers were killed during a shootout at a restaurant parking lot that started with a traffic stop in the Newhall area of Southern California. The suspects fled, and one killed himself before he was captured.
