Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputies Back To Work After Death Of Danny Oliver

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Four days after losing one of their own in a deadly crime spree, Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies are left asking themselves what they would have done in his shoes.

Deputy Danny Oliver was shot and killed while inspecting a suspicious vehicle. His death sparked a two-county manhunt and allegedly led to multiple carjackings and the death of a Placer County Sheriff's deputy.

The job of protecting the community as a law enforcement officer never stops, even for tragedies like what happened on Friday.

Deputy Adam Persson says he immediately went into work mode when he got Friday's call.

"You fall back on the training as far as, what you know you're supposed to do," he said. and then you get those moments of quiet—where you let it sink in."

It's been less than a week since the man deputy Persson saw at work almost every day was shot and killed. Oliver's death is a heavy blow.

"You know that going in, when you get in your car and do your job, that could be an option," Persson said. "We all just want to come home at the end of the night, unfortunately that doesn't always happen."

But even in mourning, deputies still have to come in to work to protect and serve.

"I think you just kind of find yourself putting it to the side and realizing that you have to get back out there, you've got a job to do—a very important role in society," he said.

It's a loss that lingers, because they know anything could happen to any one of them.

Persson admits after Oliver's death, saying goodbye to his own family this morning before work was extra hard.

"I think there's definitely a little more hugs and kisses..holding a little closer," he said, choking up. "But as a professional organization, we have a job to do and the community that expects it and deserves it. So we go out there and we do it."

Persson says there is plenty of support from specially trained deputies and the department chaplains that offer counseling.
