Despite Residents' Repair Attempts, Galt Shuts Down Royal Hotel Over Safety Concerns

GALT (CBS13) — A problem hotel has been shut down in Galt, after city leaders say the owners didn't make the repairs needed to keep it open.

The closure of Royal Hotel will leave several people to find a new place to live.

The city gave the hotel until Thursday to fix 19 of the 1,800 repairs needed to get the building up to code.

The tenants say they took it upon themselves and spent all night and day trying to make the repairs the city requested, but it wasn't enough to buy them more time.

Galt City Manager Jason Behrmann delivered a letter to the owners of the Royal Delta Hotel on Thursday that said the hotel is shutting down.

Resident Ken Howze says he and a few other tenants took it upon themselves to try and fix the repairs on the list the city said needed done.

But Behrmann said it wasn't enough.

"They have not met the city's requirements to fix the significant health, safety fire code violations," he said.

Representatives from Sacramento County Health and Services were at the hotel to help the remaining residents relocate.

"If they get those done in the next couple days, then the hotel can reopen, but we still have another longer list of items that need to be repaired—over 1,800," Behrmann said. "So it really is kind of a short-term solution."
