Community Jumps In To Help Delta Humane Society

STOCKTON (CBS13) – Once a week, the Delta Humane Society goes to pick up food from a pet food supplier.

"We have about 200 animals out here.  It costs a lot to feed them," said Patrice Davidson, Executive Director of the shelter.

At $325 dollars a day, the shelter wouldn't be able to afford to pay for food.  Instead the food is donated.

"Broken bags, mislabeled, things they couldn't sell," Davidson said.

But two weeks ago when they went to pick up the food, Davidson says they left empty handed.

"They told my driver they had no food and there weren't going to be anymore donations," Davidson said.

All of these animals still in need of food.

"We were like panicking.  We only had 30 days left in our supply," Davidson said.

With few options, the humane society turned to the community.

"There's a lot of wonderful people," Davidson said.

From as far away as the East Coast, donations are pouring in; from food to money, the shelter now has about a year and a half supply of food.

"It's so wonderful to know we don't have to worry," Davidson said.

And in the season of giving, the shelter animals will even have a Thanksgiving feast after a pet food store in Boston donated all these cans of turkey stew.

"We're so happy we can get this to them for Thanksgiving," Davidson said.

The shelter is still concerned about longevity and is looking for a longtime supplier. The pet food supplier says this is a misunderstanding,  but haven't specified if they'll continue to supply the animal shelter.
