Marlins Make Record $325 Million Deal With Giancarlo Stanton

(Miami, FL) - The Marlins have one big fish and they're not tossing him back anytime soon. CBS Sports learned on Monday, Nov. 17, the Marlins set a record-breaking deal with Giancarlo Stanton worth $325 million to keep him for 13 years, which would make him age 38 by the time the contract ends. However, in addition to making sports history, Stanton's contract comes with an early opt-out clause in place after six years, in addition to a full no-trade provision.
In a conference call with ESPN, Miami owner Jeffrey Loria confirmed the deal, saying, "It's a landmark moment for the franchise and Giancarlo, and it's for the city and fans to rally around."
Stanton landing this home run deal doesn't come as a complete surprise; other players like Miguel Cabrera and Alex Rodriguez previously signed deals nearing $300 million. After a great season, Stanton led the National League in homers with 37 and in total bases with 299, even after missing the final weeks of the season following being hit in the face by a fast ball.
"Giancarlo Stanton has come of age and he's going to be here a long time," added Loria. "It's wonderful to have a young man [with] this caliber, integrity and ability, and I'm very happy."
The Marlins haven't reached the playoffs since 2003, but the bases are loaded now. They are scheduled to formally announce the new deal Wednesday morning in a press conference.
