Sacramento Soccer Fans Excited For Chance At MLS Team

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento soccer fans and players are pumped up after Mayor Kevin Johnson announced he's heading to New York City to make a case for a professional team in the capital city.

Sacramento Republic players are hoping the mayor can score in the Big Apple.

Players and fans want to keep the party and momentum going for the team that won a USL Pro championship in its inaugural season.

"MLS should have already given us the bid really," said Republic goalkeeper Dominik Jakubek.

He says the team's success should speak volumes in New York.

"If you look at all at what's happening with the fan support, the front office, us winning a championship it's really a no brainer," he said.

Fans like Peter Jacquez believe the team can add an extra kick to our region's economy.

"It'll help because soccer is the No. 1 sport and a lot of people don't know that. But it is the No. 1 sport and a lot of money is being handled," he said.
