Oakland Police Arrest More Than 40 Protesters

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Oakland's mayor says more than 40 people have been arrested for hurling bottles, breaking windows and setting small fires during protests of a Missouri grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black 18-year-old.

Mayor Jean Quan said early Tuesday that no serious injuries were reported in overnight demonstrations, during which freeways were blocked and businesses and a police car were spray-painted.

Quan said Oakland police showed tremendous restraint in the face of hundreds of protesters provoking them for hours.

Some demonstrators lay on the ground while others outlined their bodies in chalk during a moment of silence in memory of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old shot to death by a police officer Aug. 9 in Ferguson, Missouri.
