Sacramento Gun Stores Gearing Up For Black Friday Sales Surge

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Gun stores are expecting big business on Black Friday, as it's the time of year when firearm sales take off.

The boost of Black Friday sales isn't limited to just big box stores.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is ramping up staff for background checks this weekend, expecting the annual spike in gun sales.

There's no room for procrastination if you're shopping for guns this holiday season. Just Guns owner Josh Deaser says California buyers have a 10-day waiting period before they can take a gun home.

"You have to be 18 to buy a long gun, 21 to buy a handgun," he said, "a valid ID or driver's license to purchase and at time of pick up, you know, if you're buying a handgun, you'll need a handgun safety card."

But what if you're buying a gun as a gift? You can't get a background check on an unknowing family member.

Deaser says there are a couple of options to get the gun in a gift receiver's name.

"If you're married … you could buy it and transfer it later if you wanted to," he said.

Or, you can just buy a gift card and let them come buy a gun later.

Thomas Morris was shopping for himself on Wednesday, but says he has bought guns as holiday gifts for his wife before.

"Well my wife likes to shoot, and she likes to go hunting with me," he said.

Her favorite? An $89 hunting rifle.

"'You see another hunter or a game warden, throw it in the bushes!' She goes, 'Why, is it illegal?' I said, 'No. because I don't want anybody to think I'm that cheap that I'd buy you that inexpensive of a firearm to go hunting with.'"

Deaser says you may be asked for your Social Security number and secondary proof of residency before you get your gun.
