Powerful Storm Has Residents Filling Sandbags To Hold Back Possible Floodwater

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The threat of a powerful storm moving in on Thursday has those who live near streams and in low-lying areas concerned about flooding.

Late into Tuesday night, people were gathering sandbags to protect their homes from flooding.

Gina Kern left the North Highlands sandbagging site with her truck bed filled to capacity thanks to some help from 9-year-old Gibson and 8-year-old Madison.

"We got the kids out here to help; it's their toys we are trying to protect," she said.

Michelle Conner says she's not taking any chances in her flood-prone area. She says last week's storm caused her driveway to fill with water.

"We are going to go across the driveway because the whole street comes into our drain in front of our house, so if it gets stopped up, the whole street floods," she said.

The Sacramento Fire Department is gearing up, making sure it has plenty of crews on standby. The biggest concern will be the strong winds with the storm knocking down trees and power lines.

Crews at the Sacramento International Airport have been working on their storm plan and ramping up staff since Saturday. Passengers could still see some delays if the storm brings enough rain, snow or wind.
