Sierra Snow Catches At Least One Driver Offguard

DONNER SUMMIT (CBS13) — Snowfall continued to increase in the Sierra as a strong storm rolled through the region on Thursday afternoon.

The storm left Mike Meyer stuck waiting on a tow truck. The Arizona native hadn't seen snow until Thursday. He nearly spun out his Mustang GT as he drove the Sierra roads without chains.

"I didn't know it was gonna be this freaking snowy? I'm from Arizona, never seen this stuff, first experience," he said. "It's cold as crap out here—been here 20 minutes it's already snowed over."

Just up the road, traffic, was stopped as Caltrans wasn't letting anything through on Eastbound Interstate 80 near the Donner Summit as crews worked to clear a spinout.

Ons CHP sergeant is bracing for the worst as conditions worsen.

"They'll come up, unprepared, without chains," Sgt. Randy Fisher.

Forecasters warned drivers about limited to zero visibility, with the worst still to come.
