Man Wanted On Child Porn Charges In Ohio Caught In Oroville

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Federal authorities believe a child-pornography suspect who fled Ohio during the investigation has surrendered due in part to the attention the case received on social media.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said Monday that 33-year-old Jeremiah Malfroid of suburban Columbus turned himself in Saturday in the northern California city of Oroville. He had been featured on the agency's smartphone app and on a Facebook page, which was shared more than 200,000 times. Both generated many tips.

Malfroid was charged in October with production, receipt, distribution and possession of child pornography. The search of his laptop turned up nearly 700 sexually explicit videos and images of minors.

Authorities say Malfroid had absconded after the search. He was being held in California, and it wasn't clear if he had an attorney yet.
